m o r e   pr e c i s e ,   t h a l a s s e m i a   is   a   di s o r d e r   in s i d e   t h e   re d   bl o o d   c e l l s   in   h u m a n   b o d y ,   s p e c i f i c a l l y 
t h e   h e m o g l o b i n   m o l e c u l e .   T h a l a s s e m i a   is   a n   in h e r i t e d   g e n e t i c   di s o r d e r   or   g e n e t i c   di s e a s e , 
w h i c h   m e a n s   th a t   th e   di s e a s e   is   p a s s e d   o n   to   c h il d r e n   b y   p a r e n t s   thr o u g h   th e   g e n e s . 
T h a l a s s e m i a   is   n o t   in f e c t i o u s   a t   all,   a n d   it   c a n   n o   w a y   b e   p a s s e d   t hr o u g h   bl o o d   tr a n s f u s i o n , 
c o n t a c t   wit h   a n o t h e r   p e r s o n ,   thr o u g h   bl o o d ,   air   or   fo o d .   T h a l a s s e m i a   p a t i e n t s   s h o u l d   n o t   b e 
tre a t e d   a s   a n   o u t c a s t   d u e   t o   th e   m i s c o n c e p t i o n   o f   th e   di s e a s e   b e i n g   c o n t a g i o u s .
T h e r e   ar e   b a s i c a l l y   t w o   m a i n   ty p e s   o f   th a l a s s e m i a ,   a n d   th e y   ar e   al p h a   th a l a s s e m i a   a n d   b e t a 
t h a l a s s e m i a .   B o t h   ty p e s   o f   th e   di s e a s e   in t e r f e r e s   wi t h   th e   n o r m a l   pr o d u c t i o n   o f   re d   bl o o d 
c e l l s   b y   af f e c t i n g   th e   h e m o g l o b i n   m o l e c u l e s   in   th e   c e l l ,   w h i c h   ar e   a   k e y   f a c t o r   o f   t h e 
d e v e l o p m e n t   a n d   fu n c t i o n   o f   h u m a n   re d   bl o o d   c e l l s .   T h e   pr o d u c t i o n   o f   a b n o r m a l   h e m o g l o b i n 
ar e   k n o w n   a s   th e   S t r u c t u r a l   H e m o g l o b i n   V a r i a n t s ,   a n d   th e y   ar e   t h e   H e m o g l o b i n   S ,

t o   st a y   a d h e r e   to   t h e i r   tr e a t m e n t   pl a n s .   T h e   tre a t m e n t s   ar e   q u i t e   fre q u e n t ,   a n d   s u f f e r e r s   o f 
s e v e r e   or   m o d e r a t e   th a l a s s e m i a   s h o u l d   stri c t l y   fo ll o w   th e i r   pr e s c r i b e d   tr e a t m e n t   pl a n s .
P a t i e n t s   wi t h   al p h a   th a l a s s e m i a   u s u a l l y   s h o w s   n o   si g n s   or   s y m p t o m s   a s   th e   di s o r d e r   is   m i n o r 
t o   di s r u p t   t h e   fu n c t i o n   o f   th e   b o d y ' s   h e m o g l o b i n   in   re d   bl o o d   c e l l s .   H o w e v e r ,   th e y   ar e   sil e n t 
c a rri e r s   o f   th e   g e n e .   P a t i e n t s   o f   th a l a s s e m i a   ar e   k n o w n   to   b e   s u s c e p t i b l e   t o   c a n c e r   b a s e d   o n 
re c e n t   re s e a r c h   a s   to   h o w   th e i r   i m m u n e   h a s   d e c r e a s e d   a n d   t h e   la c k   o f   o x y g e n   d e l i v e r y 
c a u s e s   c e l l s   to   di e .   T h i s   at tr a c t s   c a n c e r ,   a c c o r d i n g   to   re c e n t   st u d i e s ,   b u t   it   is   n o t   y e t 
c o n f i r m e d . 
T h a l a s s e m i a   p a t i e n t s ,   al p h a   or   b e t a   c o u l d   s u f f e r   fr o m   a n e m i a ,   a n d   it   c a u s e s   f a t i g u e   a n d 
di z z i n e s s .   O t h e r s   si g n s   a n d   s y m p t o m s   for   th o s e   s u f f e r i n g   fr o m   th a l a s s e m i a   ar e   th e   lik e s   o f 
sl o w   gr o w t h ,   b o n e   pr o b l e m s ,   e n l a r g e d   s p l e e n ,   p a l e   a p p e a r a n c e ,   p o o r   a p p e t i t e ,   d a r k   uri n e , 
a n d   ja u n d i c e   to   lis t   a   fe w   c o m m o n   o n e s .
